McKinsey measured this in 2012. Gartner re-measured it in 2023 and found it unmoved — while the number of applications the average worker juggles went from six to eleven. A decade of SaaS did not fix the problem. It added places to look.

Industrial manufacturing M&A reached $173 billion, up 28% from $135 billion the year before. Deals above $5 billion now account for 56% of that value, against 18% in FY2024.

Buyers are paying 15–30% above sector medians for assets tied to AI compute, grid and defense at once. The consolidation is being priced on AI relevance, not on revenue.

Even flagship CAD now ships AI that summarises team design changes and retrieves “tribal knowledge.” SOLIDWORKS 2026 ships AURA to do exactly that.

And then the limits: AURA reads community posts and documentation — it does not read your PDM or PLM vault, it does not retrieve engineering knowledge from your organisation's own history, and it requires the 3DEXPERIENCE cloud, so desktop SOLIDWORKS users cannot reach it at all. The most valuable vendor in CAD named the problem exactly, then solved it inside one seat.
